No microwave, no Wendy's... My cooking skills have had to come a long way in the past year. Here is a yummy pizza that I was so proud of I decided to take a picture of it.

"Red Eye" 10/08/2003

This makes my last journal entry a bit ironic as I must now unfortunately report the demise of one of my guava trees. One of my neighbors in an attempt to be nice decided to clean my yard for me. At some point he chopped down one of the guava trees. Big time bummer man. I can't really get mad about it, but it is really frustrating.

I've spent the past month getting applications ready for graduate school. I've made up my mind that is what I want to do after Peace Corps. I'm applying to Stanford, University of Washington, University of Denver, and CU. It takes quite a bit of time to put everything together for these applications. Good thing I started early.

There has been a breakout of "Red Eye". In the village. I would estimate that at least one in ten people has red, swollen eyes. Everyone is having a great time walking around calling each other "Red Eye".

"Hey you red eye?"

"Ya man!"

"Hahahahah."

"Ha ha ha haaaa."

Fortunately I haven't gotten it yet. I am making sure to disinfect the keyboards and mice at the center every day for now.

Today we finally started to get some rainy season type weather. It has been so hot around here lately that it feels like the sun is trying to push me over. The heat really gets fatiguing after a while.

My computer classes have been going well. I have a class in the morning in Colonarie for recent secondary school graduates. It is designed to prepare them for the International Computer Driver's Licence Exam. It should take about 6 more weeks. In the afternoons I have the children from South Rivers Primary School. Grades 7 and 8 come in for scheduled classes. The other children are awarded computer lab passes for good behavior in school. They can use the passes after school to play educational games. That should pretty much be my schedule until December when I get to take a vacation home to Colorado.

I also started tutoring two sixth graders in reading. Theo and Kemron. They are both really smart kids, but the educational system here is set up so that you can somehow make it to sixth grade without being able to read, so they did. I noticed that reading was a real problem with children at the school, so I decided to make it a secondary project.
