Workers from VinLec watch the runoff from tropical storm Lili in the Colonarie river. If I had taken another picture an instant later you would see these guys diving for cover. My camera makes a very lightning-like flash.

"Tropical Storm Lili" 9/24/2002

Tropical storm Lili blew right over St. Vincent last night. The wind started blowing at about 2 in the afternoon, and didn't stop till about 7 this morning. It was mostly just windy until the middle of the night when it just started dumping rain. Since South Rivers is pretty far inland and in a valley, there wasn't much damage here. Down the road, out on the coast 4 people were killed in a mudslide. A few others' roofs were blown off. Overall, the wind wasn't too bad, but the rain caused most of the problems with mudslides. Electricity and phones were out for about 14 hours too.

I've definitely been in worse weather than this in Colorado. The main problem here is the flimsy buildings. Deforestation also leads to a lot of erosion and mudslides. Tomorrow I am heading into Kingstown, so I will get a better view of what happened on the coast.
