"Chicken Plucker" 8/22/2002
I got to pluck some chickens today! My new host mother, Annie Andrews' brother is getting married this Saturday, and the family started to prepare for the reception. On the menu: lots of chicken. Mr. Andrews has been raising several chickens just for this event. Today, the slow ones went to chicken heaven (and my tummy too). I also got to play a little bit cricket today with my host brother Camilus, his cousin Nickolas, and two guys named Tay and Gregory who work at the power station where I am living. I also took a tour of the village, and met some of the local people. Everyone here in South Rivers is very cool even if a bit disenfranchised by the recent price drops in bananas. Everyone is just happy to be living life. I look forward to getting to know these people better. How hard this will be to do is yet to be determined. I am very impressed by St. Vincent. This is a very beautiful country. Vincentians obviously take great pride in their country. The windward side of the island is incredibly beautiful with its windswept beaches and misty mountain peaks. The community center where I will work is also a very impressive building. I have yet to find out who is in charge of it. I hope to get pictures of all this once I am established in the community and won't appear to be a picture taking tourist. |
