"Countdown" 8/19/2004
I am on the final countdown of my Peace Corps service. Only two weeks now until I go home to Colorado. Over the past few weeks I have had days where I am excited to go home, and then days where I wish I could stay here. I am not excited about being another anonymous person stuck in traffic on I-25. I don't want to deal with having to pay for car insurance, health insurance, and whatever other kinds of insurance responsible people are supposed to have. I will miss my orange and guava trees. I will miss "my" kids. I am excited that I won't have to ride crammed in the back of a minibus with three other people (one of them always a big fat lady) squished into the same seat as we bounce over the "road" and listen to my eardrums rattle around in my head from the loud music. I won't have to dodge chicken or dog or goat or donkey poop whenever I walk somewhere. I won't have to wash my clothes by hand either. The hardest thing though, will be leaving all of my friends here. Here I am part of a community, am accepted by them, and have more true friends than I ever did back home. Thinking about that makes me wonder if I'll make it back in Colorado. Anyways, before I leave I am trying to visit as many parts of the country as I can. This Monday I took the Barracuda ferry to Union Island, and then on Tuesday took the Captain Yannis Tour. This time the tour took us to an island called Mopion. It is just a small little sand bar out in the middle of the ocean. I also got to go to a different island in the Tobago Cays than when I went on the Yannis tour before. |
