I'll have a picture of our Pigeon Island adventure as soon as I can borrow one from somebody. I forgot my camera. "Vacation?" 8/06/2002

Ok, I am going to dispel some myths here that I am on some sort of wild two year vacation. I will begin by describing the wonderful day we spent at the beach on Sunday at Pigeon Point. Turquoise water, golden sand, cool ocean breeze... Ohhhhh yeah. The Caribbean is a stunningly beautiful place, and am truly blessed to be here. I am, however, not deluded into thinking that this will be a vacation.

Most of the people here are wonderful, but they face some very serious problems. Will I successfully adapt to the strange undercurrents of this culture and eventually make some positive changes? Will I even get used to washing my clothes by hand, boiling my water, and sweating it out with no air-conditioning? We'll see...

Until then I hope that no one thinks of my trip down here as a vacation. Sure, I'll get to go to the beach on weekends, but I could do that in plenty of places in the U.S. and not have to worry about catching dengue fever, getting bitten by a rabid dog, or run over by some transport driver who is in a rum induced stupor.
