"Parental Visit" 06/18/2003
Wow. A whole month without writing in my journal. I must have been busy. Mom and Dad came to visit me. It was so great to see them again. I was just waiting for something crappy to happen during their visit but everything went great. They came in on the 5th. I wanted them to see a little bit of Kingstown, so the first night we stayed at a hotel close to town. The next day, I took them around town and to the Peace Corps office. After that we headed to south Rivers. Since there isn't too much to do in South Rivers I wanted them to see the Volcano. Luckily it wasn't too cloudy when we got to the top, so they got some pretty good views of it. On Sunday they got to go to my church and spend some time with my neighbors. After that it was off to Bequia. It may sound a little selfish, but I needed a vacation myself. That means that I got to spend some time out of South Rivers and Mom and Dad got to spend some on a tropical island paradise. They stayed at a hotel that is right on the beach. After bummin' on the beach for a few days in Bequia we headed to Union Island. I had never flown on the local airline, SVG Air, but it sure was fun. You just trot out to the plane, get on, the pilot says "fasten your seatbelts", and then you're off. The view of the islands from the air was amazing. In Union Island we stayed at a hotel called Big Sands. Luckily this is the slow time of year for tourists, so we got a good deal. Our second day in Union Island we went on the Captain Yannis tour. It was just as good as the first time, except that I had better company, Mom and Dad. Mom got to snorkel around. Dad and I hiked to the church on the top of Mayreau. It was all around a great day. The next day we headed back to St. Vincent on "fasten your seatbelt" air. The whole time went by so fast. Hopefully Micah will get to visit me here too. Maybe I'll plan a trip home for Christmas. I was kind of jealous that Mom and Dad got to go back to Colorado. St. Vincent is my home for now though and I am happy to be here. The whole trip let me reflect on how my life is going, and I am sure that for now the Peace Corps is the best thing for me. |
