"Court II" 05/18/2003
Last night we had the second installment of "Court". Now I am a little confused about the whole thing. I get the impression that it is just kind of a show that everyone puts on for fun. On the other hand, I can tell by the way some people talk that there is more to it. As I said in my last journal entry, the subject of the trial was incest. From having spoken to some people in the village, the incest may have actually happened. The mock trial then is a form of public humiliation. I'll have to ask around a little more about the whole thing. Anyways... Last night, the jury of the "court" declared the man guilty. They then had a "hanging". They basically hung a dummy with the accused's clothes on it. Everybody got a pretty big kick out of it. Especially after the gallows broke and fell down. I guess you'd have to have been there. Yesterday I went for a hike on the Vermont nature trail with Martha, Matt, and Kevin. Today I am paying the price in bug bites. I haven't been this bitten up since I got here. The nature trail is really cool. I even saw some wild parrots flying around. After the hike, Kevin and I stopped off at Yvette's BBQ city on the way home. It is definitely the best BBQ place on the island. This coming week I will be finishing my second group of ICDL students. I think that this class went much better than the last one. With some experience my teaching skills are getting a little better. Last week I took pictures of all the students with my digital camera. They loved it. I think that a Peace Corps volunteer can sort of gauge how things are going by how much fruit they have. Right now I've got a huge pinapple, the biggest papaya I've ever seen, coconuts, and lots of mangoes. All of them given to me by friends and nighbors. Hopefully my fruit bin will stay full. |
