"Sports Day" 2/16/2004
Last Thursday, the much awaited sports day took place. It is one of the highlights in the school year. It is similar to a track meet back home except that it takes place on a dirt field, the runners don't usually wear shoes, and nobody is too worried about who wins or loses. The school is divided into four teams that compete against each other, but the main idea is just to have fun. I spent almost the whole day just watching the events. I was surprised at how many more of the children I know now than I did a year ago. After sports day I went to attend a dinner with the new U.S. Ambassador to the region. The dinner took place at Young Island (the nicest hotel in St. Vincent - on its own island). Most of the Americans who permanently reside in St. Vincent were there. Including the Peace Corps volunteers that only totaled about 50 people. It felt strange to be dressed up and wearing a tie at a nice hotel. |
